Ephesians 4:22-24 – “That in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which is the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.” (NASB)

Get rid of the old parts and put in the new things. When building an addition to the house, we had to make sure that the new foundation was tied into the old. That meant getting rid of some of the block here and there to make room for the new block to interconnect with the old - making it appear that the addition was part of the original house. Today's scripture reminds us of ridding ourselves of the old - our former manner of life - the old self in order to make room for putting on the new self. It was hard work to break the old foundation block, but it needed to be done in order for the new addition to connect seamlessly. In life, we will have to chisel away the old self, painful as it will be. If we want to put on the new self, it has to be done. We couldn't just lay the new block next to the old. Eventually, the foundations would split and there would be trouble. Trying to hold on to the old self while putting on the new self in Christ will lead to problems too. Best to do it right and make sure we have a solid foundation on which to live.
