Daily Devotional for Saturday November 11, 2017

Romans 13:8 (NASB) Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.

"Really, you don't want anything for it?" After helping a friend, we got things all set and it was time for me to leave. That's when he asked me how much he owed me. “Nothing,” I replied, “that's what friends do for each other.” He kept insisting that he wanted to pay me for my time and the materials I brought, but no was the answer each time. Today's verse speaks of not owing anything to anyone except love. Just imagine if we could really live out this verse. What if people would help one another and not expect anything in return? What if those blessed with excess would give and not look to get anything back? I knew what my friend was thinking because I had been in the same situation - wanting to pay someone who did something for me but wouldn't let me. Sometimes it comes down to just loving and not seeking anything for ourselves. That's exactly what Christ did for you and me on the cross. He wasn't looking for anything in return. He simply wanted us to know how much our Father loves us. What will you choose: self or love? One has a big return and the other has an eternal one.

Personal Application: Continue spending time with the Lord daily. Sow righteousness and reap the fruit of God's unfailing love.

Family Devotional: Read this chapter to your family. Ask them if anything spoke to them as you read. Talk about their answers and show them that one important aspect of this chapter is that we must continue to spend time with the Lord and keep our hearts focused on His plans and purposes. Pray for them.
