Deuteronomy 15:11 “For the poor will never cease to be in the land; therefore, I command you, saying, ‘You shall freely open your hand to your brother, to your needy and poor in your land.’” (NASB)
As we came around the corner, there he stood. We had received a first aid call for a man who needed our help. We weren't sure what the problem was, but as we pulled up to his house, he stood there pointing across the street. We entered the house to find an elderly man who had fallen and couldn't get up. He was a rather large man, and his neighbor, the one who directed us to him, had tried to lift him up to no avail. Today's verse speaks of the poor, and opening our hands to help a brother in need. The poor doesn't always relate to financial situations, it could be a brother who has fallen and can't get up, or a brother who needs a word of encouragement for something he is facing in his life. There are many reasons that there are poor and needy around us, but only one reason to help. It's what Jesus would do, and a command of God as today's verse shares. Are we lending a hand freely to those in need? Everyone knows someone in need... what are we waiting for?
