1 John 3:16 “We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.” (NASB)
It's part of the job that no one talks about. The weather was cold that day. The wind was fierce and the snow was falling as we stood in line to say goodbye. I, like so many other firefighters, stood at attention as the fire engine carrying his body, covered by flag of the United States, rolled by. Today's scripture shares about love... the greatest love... the love of Christ who laid down His life for us. As I stood there, I began to understand the second part of the verse. We ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. This friend of mine, like so many others who serve, had given the greatest sacrifice a man can offer. He gave his life in the search for others at a fire. He had put the lives of those he served above his own, like Christ, who has given His life for those He serves... us. I wonder how far we would be willing to go to show that kind of love. Would we be willing to lay down our life for another? Say a prayer for the firemen and police officers who daily are willing to lay down their lives for you.
