Proverbs 27:17 “Iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another.” (NASB)
I watched in amazement as he continued to hit the hot metal. I had the opportunity to watch a metalworker at work. I watched as he heated the steel to the point he could begin to shape the it into a horse shoe. Beating the metal, reheating and beating it again and again. Today's verse is one that is probably the most used verse when speaking to men about discipline. It speaks of how one man sharpens another. I couldn't help but think, as I watched him, that it wasn't just a one-time thing. He went back and forth between heating, beating it, and measuring it against the hoof of the horse until it had reached the most useful shoe. If the shoe wasn't just right, the horse wouldn't be able to be useful in the field, or on a racetrack, or when a rider climbed on his back. In a man's world, there are things that will cause us to not "work" right, to live right, and we must be willing to endure the heat of the fire, and the beating into shape of what it means to be a godly man. It must come from God above through the love and caring of another man. The question is twofold. Are we working correctly, and are we willing to endure the heat and beating of being shaped by Christ?
Personal Application: Continue spending time with the Lord daily. Sow righteousness and reap the fruit of God's unfailing love.
Family Devotional: Read this chapter to your family. Ask them if anything spoke to them as you read. Talk about their answers and show them that one important aspect of this chapter is that we must continue to spend time with the Lord and keep our hearts focused on His plans and purposes. Pray for them.
