Scripture:

Psalm 34:18 – “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (NASB)

Observation:

He needed a heart transplant. As we began to walk from Penn Station to Ground Zero, the day after the attacks, we ran into a captain of the NY City Fire Dept. His face was white; his spirit was broken. He shared with us how he had lost some men during the attack, and he decided to put in his papers. I will never forget the words he said, "My heart just isn't into it anymore!" This man, who had served the public, worked side by side with other men and women, willing to lay down his life, had lost his heart to keep going. He was broken hearted. Today's verse speaks to many of us who have been or are broken hearted, who's spirits are crushed. It states that the Lord is near to those… Life will throw things at us. It will throw things that will crush our spirits and break our hearts, but our Lord is right there with us. Will we allow Him, the great physician, to do a heart transplant? With the celebration of His birth days away, maybe the best gift we can get is to open our hearts to His transplant. He is near. We just have to open the door of our heart!
