Scripture:

Matthew 15:11 – β€œIt is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.” (NASB)

Observation:

“Sure, no problem. I got this.” It was right after lunch; however, what I ate wasn't the problem. Shortly after I uttered those words, I hit the tree while moving some stone with a backhoe. I was kind of boasting that I could move the stone with no problem that was until I hit the tree while turning around. Boy did the guys have a good laugh at my expense. Maybe I needed one of those signs on the rearview mirror that read "Objects in Mirror are Larger than they Appear!" OR I could have taken the time to be more observant. Today's verse speaks about what goes into our mouth and what comes out of our mouth that defiles the man. It sure did in my case. Here I thought I was this great backhoe operator only to find out that my mouth was bigger than my knowledge or skill. Taking the time to think before we speak can save us a lot of embarrassing moments. It can also save people from a lot of hurt when we utter those comments that do nothing but hurt someone. In my case it was only a tree and my pride. Not too bad in the grand scheme of things, but our words can do a lot of damage. So let's be careful with what we say and how we speak.
