What has your men’s ministries become?
Pancakes + Bacon + Sausage + Weak coffee + Powdered donuts = Men’s Ministries... right? It seems these breakfast items have become synonymous with men’s ministries in the local church. However, men’s ministries consists of so much more than a monthly breakfast.
What could your men’s ministries be?
According to Sam Haubrick, men’s leader at Lawton First Assembly of God, the key to creating a solid ministry to men begins at the top. “The church body needs to first see the full support of men’s ministries from the pastoral staff before the majority of men will buy into it and get involved. This is critical as the majority of the male church body will not see the importance of men’s ministries if they don’t see that the pastoral staff feels it’s important.”
Another key element of a successful men’s ministry relates to an environment of openness and honesty where men don’t feel ashamed or intimidated to discuss real life issues. Sam continues, “Real men are all dealing with real problems. Ultimately, this is what will attract and keep men in men’s ministry – the fact that they can come and share, learn and overcome real life problems and issues that many other men have and are facing as well.”
Utilizing the Reach, Teach, Release (RTR) strategy, Sam has kick-started a dynamic men’s ministry comprised of a large group of men from the church, including the entire pastoral staff. Says Sam, “We have taken this (RTR strategy) and made it the foundation of all we do in our men’s ministry. Each activity or ministry we consider has to align with one of these three areas.”
The RTR Strategy is a ‘some assembly required’ approach to Men’s Ministries, but one that enables a local leader to build a custom designed men’s group in their local church.
