Matthew 22:37-38 (NASB) 37 And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the great and foremost commandment.
The key word in today’s verse is a little three letter word Even though it’s small, its meaning is huge…the word is ALL! Jesus is answering a question put to Him about which commandment is the greatest. Jesus’ answer is the key to living life with Christ—giving ALL of ourselves to Him. It is easy to say that we love Him with ALL of ourselves, but do we live it? That’s the second part of the answer Jesus gives—to love your neighbor as yourself. We all find no problem in loving ourselves. In fact, it’s easy to see every day. Just look through the ad section of the Sunday newspaper, and you will see hundreds of things that will improve ourselves—from our looks, to our bodies, to our homes, and so on. Do we love God the same way? Are we willing to purchase what it will take to love Him? Prayer, fasting, and Bible study? What purchases will we make for Him today?
