Proverbs 3:11-12 (NASB) My son, do not reject the discipline of the Lord Or loathe His reproof, For whom the Lord loves He reproves, Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.
Who hasn't heard the classic line: this is going to hurt me more than it will you? I never understood that statement as my father stated it as he disciplined me growing up. It clicked when I had children of my own. There were times, many times, when my dad would walk me to my room to discipline me based upon a recent behavior. Each time he would utter those words, and each time I wondered what he meant. Today's verse speaks of sons not rejecting the discipline of our Lord or loathing His reproof for whom He loves He reproves. Finally, one day when one of my daughters had acted in an unbecoming way, I found myself taking her aside to discipline her. I found myself saying those same words my dad said to me. I got it. I understood. I loved my daughter so much and would much rather be enjoying a moment than disciplining her, but in disciplining her, I was in fact loving her. No matter what age we are, we are still sons of God. I am sure He would much rather love on us than discipline us, but it is, in fact, the same thing. So, don't reject it His discipline. Accept it; don't loathe it, but love it. It's always for our own good!
